Winter’s Almost Over…Are Your Tires Ready for Spring?

The snow is melting, the sun is warming us all up, and your vehicle no longer feels like an icebox on wheels. That’s right – spring is just around the corner! But before you roll into the new season, let’s talk about your tires. They’ve gotten you through the ice, slush, and pothole filled roads of winter…now it’s time to make sure they’re ready for the next season.

  1. Check Your Tire Pressure

Cold weather causes tire pressure to drop, while rising temperatures can increase. If your tires are over or underinflated, you might experience poor traction, uneven wear, or even reduced fuel efficiency. So be sure to grab a gauge, check your PSI, and make sure your tires are as ready for spring as you are. For more information on checking your tire pressure, check out our blog post here.

  1. Tread Depth

The deeper the tread, the better your traction, especially on those surprise spring rain showers. Hold a quarter between your thumb and forefinger with the caribou facing down, insert the quarter into the tread groove with the caribou’s nose facing you. If the caribou’s nose is covered by tread, your tires are safe. If you can see the caribou’s nose, your tires need to be replaced.

  1. Alignment & Rotations

Winter roads can be brutal on your suspension, and if your car has started pulling to one side, your alignment might be off. Getting an alignment and rotating your tires ensures even wear, smoother rides, and a longer lifespan for your tires. Find more details on spring wheel alignments on our blog post here.

  1. Swapping Out Winter Tires

Your heavy-duty winter tires were great for getting through the snow and ice, but as the weather warms up, they can wear down faster and reduce fuel efficiency. Switching back to all-season or summer tires is like swapping your winter coat for a light jacket.

  1. Bonus Tip: A Little Spring Cleaning

Your tires have likely collected a season’s worth of salt, slush, and who knows what from the road. Give them (and your rims) a good wash to prevent corrosion and keep them looking fresh.

A little maintenance now can save you from big headaches later, so check that pressure, inspect your tread, and get ready for smoother, safer drives ahead.
